Funeral Costs
The costs of a funeral are divided into two parts: EDFS direct services and disbursements.
These are both presented on one invoice.
In detail, the two parts are:
1) EDFS direct services
These are service provided directly to you by us including:
  • 24 hour call-out service
  • Funeral arrangements (coffins, vehicles etc)
  • Private Chapel of Rest and its use up to the day of the funeral
  • Conveyance of the deceased
  • Hygiene treatment of the deceased
  • Delivery and preparation of all documentation
2) Disbursements
Disbursement is monies paid out by us on your behalf, over which we have no control. Disbursements include:
  • Crematorium or Cemetery fees
  • Church fees
  • Minister's fees
  • Newspaper announcements
  • Floral tributes
  • Catering costs
We will discuss all the necessary costs and details of the funeral arrangements with you, and will give you a list of estimated costs which we will ask you to approve.
If the deceased is the be cremated, a Cremation Certificate, signed by two doctors, will be issued. The cost of these certificates come under 'Disbursements' and will be listed on the funeral account.
Only when a death is referred to the Coroner, will these certificates be unnecessary.
HELP WITH FUNERAL COSTS
When handing in the small black and white Death Certificate and Benefit Books at your DSS office, enquire about any possible help that you may be entitled to towards funeral costs.
Assets such as Cash Investments, Insurance and Bonds should be declared and could effect your claim to benefit.
Funeral Grant
Depending on your circumstances you may qualify for financial help. You should enquire at your local DSS office for further information. People in receipt of Housing Benefits, Income Support, Council Tax and Family Credit may qualify for a Funeral Grant. Click here for further information about Funeral Grants.
Social Fund
If you are on a low income, the Social Fund could possibly help by giving you a loan for a simple funeral. The loan covers expenses incurred for the transportation of the deceased if the death occurred away from home, a basic coffin, fees for the Funeral Director, organist and clergymen for a 'simple' funeral.
